Happy New *Liturgical* Year!

Happy Advent Friends & Family!

Today is the beginning of a new liturgical year for the Catholic Church. I’m always excited for a fresh new start. Every year I choose Advent to make my new year’s resolutions since most of mine have to do with my spiritual life anyway. As my recovery is going very well and at a fast pace these days I’m very excited for the physical progress I will make in this coming year. But I’m also very excited to see what God is calling me to do in this new year! Since I’m becoming stronger I know that God will present me with many new opportunities. It will be interesting to see what they are and to get back into the swing of things and start working again.

I pray many blessings for you and your families in this new liturgical year!

Confusion in Allegiance??? My sports teams explained

I’m constantly asked from people on twitter, facebook, myspace and people in the real world why I root for Detroit Pro teams (Red Wings, Lions, Tigers & Pistons) yet when it comes to college teams I root for The Ohio State University & Notre Dame.

Well, there’s a very good explanation….

My dad and his family are from Ohio and most of his family still lives there. Many of our relatives have attended (including my grandfather) and even worked at OSU. So that’s why Ohio State is my #1 favorite NCAA team . I really do bleed Scarlet & Gray!

As for Notre Dame… I grew up two hours away from the school and it’s a school named after Our Lady! And I happen to be an Irish Catholic! While they have drifted from Catholic teachings I pray for them and still root for them. I love that they continue the tradition of the entire football team attending Mass the morning of every home game.

I have to mention my third favorite NCAA team which is Michigan State! I lived in East Lansing for about 6 years working and doing ministry for  University Christian Outreach on MSU campus.

As for the Detroit Pro teams… when I was 19 months old my parents moved from CA to Michigan and while my college football teams have ties to my family & religion, my pro teams are from what I consider to be my home state. I love all things Michigan… except for the University of Michigan as is the same as many of my Spartan friends!

I’m very passionate about sports and undeniably dedicated to my specific teams! I was raised to cheer for Detroit teams as well as Ohio State & The Big Ten teams during bowl season. Most of my siblings have the same allegiance to these teams. We didn’t pick them because of their colors or a player is cute.

These days it seems many people are anti labels. And while I think it’s wrong to deny someone something because of their label… I happen to looove my labels! It tells people who I am and I’m very proud of who I am!

I am a woman! I am Catholic! I am Latina! I am a Buckeye! An Irish! A Red Wing! a Lion! a Tiger! a Piston (oh MY!) etc…

Anyway…. So that’s why my teams are who they are!

‘Eat Like a Turkey and Run Like a Gazelle’

Thanksgiving morning I joined about 1,100 other people at Reed’s Lake in East Grand Rapids for the annual   Gobble Wobble. It was my first race since I was shot in the chest and nearly killed a year and a half ago.  I walked 4 miles in an hour and 14 min’s! (The time clock in the picture says 15 but it took us some time to get the camera out!) This was a very exciting event for me on my road to recovery! I hope to work up to jogging at some point over the winter and from there get back to running. I know that there will be many more races to come!

A friend of mine is generously giving me personalized dance lessons for some dance therapy. He’s very careful with my injured muscle area and my energy level…. or lack thereof! It’s an absolute thrill for me to dance again and is great motivation for me to work hard at my recovery. I’m very grateful to be doing something that I love so much again!

There’s obviously so much to be thankful for! And I give my praise where praise is due…

(Clips of) Psalm 136

Praise the Lord, who is so good; God’s love endures forever;
Praise the God of gods; God’s love endures forever;
Praise the Lord of Lords; God’s love endures forever;
Who alone has done great wonders, God’s love endures forever;

The Lord remembered us in our misery, God’s love endures forever;
Freed us from our foes, God’s love endures forever;
And gives food to all flesh, God’s love endures forever.

Praise the God of heaven, God’s love endures forever.

In Loving Memory of My Great Aunt Lou

Farewell Soldier

By Autumn Irlbeck

“Your fight’s been long and full of pain, but you were strong, through your suffering. You’ve been so frail and yet your fate was that of a lion, fearless and brave.

Farewell soldier, you’re battle’s done, you fought real hard and so you’ve won. Farewell soldier, you’re not alone, God is with you, you’re goin home.

You got through the dark days by keeping your light constantly burning strong and bright  and now your light and the shadows hide because triumph’s yours and your God’s child.

Farewell soldier, you’re battle’s done, you fought real hard and so you’ve won. Farewell soldier, you’re not alone, God is with you, you’re goin home.

You’re a conquerer, you did not fear because you knew that God was near. You’ve reached the high place and the angels sing… “Oh death where’s your victory? Oh death where’s your sting?”

Farewell soldier, you’re battle’s done, you fought real hard and so you’ve won. Farewell soldier, you’re not alone, God is with you, you’re goin home.”

New Date Set For Sentencing!

I have news from the latest pre-trial!  According to the DA  the defendant does not want to plead guilty to an added charge of assault with a deadly weapon so the district attorney’s office has decided not to re-try the case on an assault charge. Sentencing for the charge that the defendant was found guilty for is set for Dec. 10th. She’s looking to at least 30 years – life. I would like to address the court (the judge & the defendant) so I’m hoping to attend the sentencing even though I can’t really afford it!

Unfortunately at that time the defense will be filing a motion for a new trial and of course the District attorney will oppose it.

I’m praying that this can all come to an end and be completely done with on Dec. 10th! This has been a very long and painful process and I desperately want to move on and with God’s grace, (as well as with the help of family & friends) work on creating a new life for myself.

Thank you for all of your prayers and support. There’s no way I could have gotten through this without them!!! Please know that I pray daily for all those who are praying for me and for their intentions.

God is Sovereign!
